Lend Me Your Ears

X is fairly abundant and found in many areas of the world. There is no evidence that they transmit diseases to humans or other animals. Their pincers are commonly believed to be dangerous, but in reality even the curved pincers of males cause little harm to humans. It is a common urban legend that X crawls into the human ear and lay eggs in the brain. Finding X in the human ear is rare, as most species do not fly and prefer dark and damp areas (such as basements) rather than typical bedrooms.

Identify X.

In astrophysics, X is the vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects into long thin shapes in a very strong gravitational field, and is caused by extreme tidal forces. In the most extreme cases, near black holes, the stretching is so powerful that no object can withstand it, no matter how strong its components.
The word X comes from an example given by Stephen Hawking in his book A Brief History of Time, where he describes the flight of a fictional astronaut who, passing within a black hole's event horizon, is _____ by the gravitational gradient (difference in strength) from head to toe. Within a small region the horizontal compression balances the vertical stretching so that small objects being ______ experience no net change in volume.

Please Don't Get Relegated

X is the phenomenon of melting under pressure and freezing again when the pressure is reduced. Many textbooks and reference books as well as websites often claim that X can be demonstrated by looping a fine wire around a block of ice , with a heavy weight attached to it. The pressure exerted on the ice slowly melts it locally, permitting the wire to pass through the entire block. The wire's track will refill as soon as pressure is relieved, so the ice block will remain solid even after wire passes completely through.

X was discovered by Y and occurs only for substances
that have the property of expanding upon freezing, for the melting points of those substances decrease with increasing external pressure.
